How do I scan multiple pages into one document on my computer?

Every time I try to scan multiple pages they get loaded as separate files on the computer.  I need them to be one document with multiple pages.

The printer is capable of scanning multiple pages into one document.

The printer itself, in fact, beyond its hardware limitations, is not even aware of what you are scanning.

The missing ingredient might be within the printer application or software you are using.

Unfortunately, there is no one single answer -- different Operating Systems / versions work differently and the apps and programs available are different as well.

Sometimes it's a matter of digging out the location of the setting you seek.

For example

• We don't have any MacOS devices -- I have seen questions about not finding the expected settings but beyond the obvious of trying to open every sub-menu location in your scan software, I cannot comment.
• HP Smart (Windows and iOS / iPadOS) tend to put all pages into a single document -- it's the default behavior
• The full printer software can "go either way" -- what you get depends on the settings you use during the scan operation.

Printer - Full Feature Software

HP Full Feature Software / Full Driver printer software - supports printing and scanning from the web, printing in in other software and programs (for example, Word), and provides access to the full range of Printing Preferences / Shortcuts.  The full driver generally adds at one, possibly least one, possibly two shortcuts to the Desktop: Printer Assistant, HP Scan Assistant, and/or HP Scan.

NOTES:  

HP Scan is not installed if the printer does not support Scan.

The Printer Assistant is not installed if the type of full driver software does not support it.  If the printer model includes built-in Fax hardware, the software supports the setup and use of the Fax driver. No Sign-in required.

If / When asked, opt for the Full Driver / Full Software to be installed.

After the software is installed, Restart the computer and sign in.

The installation of the full driver generally adds at least one, possibly two shortcuts to the Desktop.

 Note:  Printer Assistant, HP Scan Assistant, and HP Scan are dependent on printer model and supported software options.

Thanks for the help!  I had to delete and download HP Smart again and now the scan works properly.  Before it acted like it was defaulting to individual page scans with no way to tell it any different!
