Scan from Document feeder not available why?

Scan from Document feeder not available why? Grayed out, all it says is scanner glass.

This simple DeskJet series does not have and ADF (Automatic Document Feeder).

The printer is a top-loader, that is, the paper used for printing is loaded in the top "input tray".
