Hi @JohnChristopher,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

Using generic toner cartridges with an HP M255dw laser jet printer can be a bit tricky because HP printers often have built-in measures to detect and reject non-genuine cartridges. However, there are a few steps you can try to get generic toner cartridges to work.

  • Reset the Printer: Sometimes, simply turning the printer off and back on can reset its detection mechanisms and allow it to accept generic cartridges.
  • Disable Automatic Updates: Some HP printers have firmware updates that specifically target non-HP cartridges. You can try disabling automatic firmware updates to prevent the printer from receiving such updates.
  • Update Firmware (Carefully): On the contrary, updating the printer's firmware might sometimes help. However, proceed with caution, as some firmware updates might further restrict the use of non-HP cartridges.
  • Use Reset Chips: Some generic toner cartridges come with reset chips that can fool the printer into thinking they are genuine HP cartridges. Look for cartridges that include these reset chips.
  • Purchase High-Quality Generic Cartridges: While it may be tempting to go for the cheapest option, lower-quality generic cartridges might have compatibility issues. Opting for higher-quality generics may increase your chances of success.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
