How old is the laptop and how long has this lag been an issue? Has it been the same all along, or has it gotten much worse just recently?

That's not good news -- because if it was fine at first and only recently got slower, that would indicate a failing drive -- which after it was replaced, would return to the initial performance level. But if it has been slow all along, that is not a solution.
If the laptop has a hard drive, that could explain it being slow all along.
If you do not know what hardware is in the laptop, then provide me the model number and I can do an online search to see if I can find the hardware information.
